Celebration Day

Last Friday we celebrated our topic learning. The students had decided to use their kitchen science to help the people of Nepal. Pohutukawa and Kowhai had lots of ideas and settled on a whole school  mufti day and a junior school market day! Kowhai decided to make fruit kebabs for the market day. Come and have a look at how it went...

Then it was Kebab time - lots to make! Great team work Kowhai! 

And then it was off to the market day. YUM!

And there was chocolate bread... Interesting science experiment! But was it popular?

In the afternoon the whole school put out their coins on the Nepalese flag AND guess how much we raised? 

It was $255... We were very pleased! 

What else have we been learning about...

Devan played the ukelele at our full school assembly. 

Sadie and Skyla learned how to be fantastic presenters at assembly. We were very proud of them.

 

And Cyan, Aleisha and Skyla got special awards at assembly for being great learners and helpers in Kowhai.

Mrs Ingram and Mrs Clements are very proud of all of the Kowhai kids!

Our maths learning

We have been learning about capacity and we used the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears to help us. We had lots of fun mearsuring and pouring to see which container held the most or held the least. Have a look at our photos and ask us some questions about; full, empty, more and less! 

So then we made containers out of one piece of paper to see which one held the most cubes. We had to do lots of counting!

Is it magic or ... Is it science?

 We have been learning about things we can do to change food. We have been heating, mixing, dissolving and now we are going to turn some liquid cream into butter. First we put some cream into a container and then we made sure the lid was on very tightly. 

 Then we took turns at shaking the container. It took a lot of shaking before we started to feel, and see, that the cream was changing! 

 

We saw that the cream was yellow and it was now a solid. There was some white liquid too. We poured that off and then we decided to taste our magic butter! First we had to butter the bread. 

And then it was time for the first mouthful. It looked like butter, it smelt like butter but was it going to taste like butter?

The puppet show

After we made the puppets, we decided to use the puppet theatre. We had lots of fun. Our puppets made us laugh - they were very funny.
